Traveller Patricia Buckley - April 29, 2026 from New-Orleans, Louisiana, USA

This tour is absolutely amazing!! Peter is a very personable tour guide and his passion for history is evident. He began the tour by sitting down with us to discussed what he had planned for the day. He had a map, a beautiful book filled with pictures of history and stories from people he has met over the years of giving tours.

He was also able to tweak the tour as we went through the day according to our interests. He drove our party of four in a comfortable van. The scenery of the southern Belgium was beautiful. We had several stops in the Bastion area and also had lunch at a very nice restaurant. It is a long day but so worth every minute learning about the battle, the country and the people of that area. He picked us up and returned us to our hotel in Brussels.

Day 3: France/Waterloo, April 5, 2026

We began our last day with a visit to the St. Symphorien Military Cemetery.   At the behest of the farmer who donated the land, the cemetery contains both Germans and Allied solidiers.  The gravestones, organized in small groups, are beautifully tended by nonprofit groups.  Peter highlighted particular graves, telling us about their lives and heroism.  The first and last British soldiers killed in the war are both buried there, with their tombstones nearly facing each other.  We wandered freely to absorb both the beauty and the sadness of such a place.  We never would have discovered this tranquil, emotional place without Peter’s guidance.

Next we headed back to Belgium, further back in time to the Napoleonic age.  Waterloo!  Strangely, we associate the name Waterloo with grand defeat, but that was only from the French perspective. Waterloo for the British and the rest of Europe was an important victory.  The town of Waterloo was also the place where Victor Hugo finished writing Les Miserables.

We began this part of the tour in a beautiful church filled with memorial plaques from fellow officers, regiments, and brigades.  From there we visited Wellington’s headquarters, now a museum.  We were able to hold and handle a typical rifle. We learned about Wellington and the battle.  We also saw many intereresting uniforms and other relics of the war.

We then proceeded to the actual site of the Battle of Waterloo (which is actually not lcoated in Waterloo, but nearby).  The musuem there is excellent.  We ascended the approximately 200+ steps to the top of the Lions’ Mound, offering a fantastic view of the Battlefield.

Summary

We are incredibly grateful to Peter for the fantastic three days we spent with him.  He was extremely well-prepared.  He was also very kind and patient, answering all our questions and constantly going well beyond the “boundaries” of our tour to explain not just WWI and Waterloo, but also the Franco-Prussian War and WWII.  Peter‘s explanations and personal experiences as a former soldier brought to life for us so many of the incredible stories of those who served and sacrificed their lives in WWI.  We would never have been able to see what Peter showed us on our own.  We offer our highest recommendations for Peter.  He is a fabulous guide and a wonderful person!!

Day 2: Belgium/France, April 4, 2026

We started the second day of our tour by visiting the site of the famous 1914 “Christmas Truce.”  Peter showed us the wonderful statue of two soldiers (one British and one German) reaching toward each other to shake hands, but not quite touching.  The incomplete handshake offers a profound reminder of the temporary, fragile nature of the truce.  We then visited the actual area of gthe battlefield where the truce and the football playing occurred.  Visitors to the site have even left footballs in tribute.  We then drove past a quiet farm where unexploded bombs still lay buried below the surface.  It was so hard to reconcile the peaceful looking farm with the past horrors and violence that occurred on the same land a little more than a century ago.

We then crossed into France, where our first stop was the Canadian National Vimy memorial.  It’s an amazing site situated at the top of a ridge.  We toured the trenches and underground dugouts.  We followed this with a visit to the memorial itself — a huge, “touch the sky” sculpture.  The entire visit was very moving.

We then drove to Notre Dame de Lorette, the largest French military cemetery in the world.  We first had a very nice lunch at the restaurant at the same site, and then we visited the cemetery.  The Basilica was amazing, and inside there were memorials to French soldiers and civilians (including Holocaust victims) who lost their lives in both world wars.  We then went to an area of the cemetery where the graves of Jewish and Muslim soldiers fighting for France during WWI are buried not far from each other.  We finished our visit at the enormous Ring of Remembrance, where the names of nearly 600,000 soldiers of all nationalities (including Germand) are inscribed on the walls.

We next visited Carriere Wellington, a fascinating site where tunnelers from New Zealand converted quarries into a network of tunnels, which the allies used to surprise the Germans and attack from behind their lines.

We then explored the town of Arras, where we also stayed overnight.

Day 1: Flanders Field, April 3, 2026

We had a wonderful first day with Peter Vansteenkiste. Peter was kind enough to pick us up at our hotel in Bruges.

We began the tour over coffee in the hotel. Peter explained the itinerary for the three days we would be with him. His explanation was very clear, and also made us feel even more excited about what we would see and learn during the three days we would be with him. Peter gave us a very impressive and beautifully prepared 30+ page briefing book explaining everything we would be seeing on the tour, including maps, photos, etc.

Peter then drove us to our first stop, the former site of an American WWI field hospital. It is now a working farm, where Peter and some associates of his have created a simple and yet very moving memorial to the 103 soldiers who lost their lives fighting in this area.

We then proceeded to a German cemetery. It was also quite moving. A large number of young men, teens really, are buried here. For us, this highlighted the tragedy that occurred on both sides of the war.

From there we drove to the Passchendale museum, where we saw a large variety of WWI uniforms, replicas and artifacts. It was especially interesting to see the development of helmets and camouflage, which Peter explained with great expertise in his own role as a former Belgian soldier. There was a room full of guns and artillery. We were was surprised by the actual size of the missiles used during the war. The Museum also featured a replica of the underground WWI bunkers and trenches. As we walked through the bunkers we could really sense what it must have been like for the soldiers and officers. The trenches were especially chilling, as we thought of all the young soldiers who had to live in these small spaces, open to the elements, the vermin and the oncoming fire — not just bullets, exploding shells raining shrapnel and fire on top of them.

Following our visit to Passchendale we had lunch at a very interesting restaurant owned by the founder of the Brothers in Arms project, in memory of the Australian soldiers Jim and John Hunter. The restaurant owner (Johan Vandewalle) discovered the remains of the older brother, buried with his arms folded across his chest. Johan was able to trace the story and discovered the older brother died in the arms of his younger brother. Eventually, Johan raised funds to contruct an absolutely stunning memorial to the “brothers in arms” — “in arms” both literally and figuratively. Peter also took us to Johan’s private collection of WWI items, located on the upper floor of the restaurant. This was one of the most interesting and impressive moments of our three day tour.

After lunch we went to the Tyne Cot cemetery, where Peter elaborated on the horrors of battle, and told us the stories of some of the soldiers buried there. We will never forget Peter saying so movingly how he imagined each soldier standing next to their tombstone; each with their own personal story of a life that ended too prematurely.

Next we visited Hill 60 and the “Caterpillar” crater, a massive remnant of the multiple and huge explosions resulting from a British plan to tunnel underneath German positions and plant enormous quantities of explosives. One of the explosions was so powerful that the blast wave was actually felt in London.

From there we visited the Ypres cemetery, where Peter once again told us the fascinating stories of some of the soldiers buried there. Following dinner in Ypres, we went to the Menin Gate for the “Last Post” ceremony, where Peter had arranged for us to lay a wreath. The ceremony was incredibly moving and we were deeply honored to have been able to take part in it.

Battlefieldtour WW2-ATLANTIKWALL

We had an outstanding private tour with Peter Vansteenkiste of Battlefields1, and highly recommend him for anyone looking for a knowledgeable WWII and Belgium history guide. Peter met us at Brussels Airport and transferred us to Bruges, which made arrival seamless after a long flight. From there, he curated a full day that was relaxed, engaging and incredibly informative. His expertise in WWII history is exceptional, and he shares it in a way that’s clear, interesting and easy to follow. Highlights included Damme, the Bruges bell tower climb, the Atlantic Wall bunkers, a remarkable 13th-century oak barn, and a wonderful lunch at Runway. Professional, warm and well-organised, Peter delivers a personalised experience that goes well beyond a standard tour. A fantastic start to our trip — and very likely one of the highlights.

Western Front (Nieuwpoort–Diksmuide region)

Thank you, Peter, for the wonderful day we experienced on the Western Front (Nieuwpoort–Diksmuide region). We truly enjoyed the way you managed to captivate a group of 55 young people (aged 14 to 16) with the historical events that took place there.

You were able to engage the students through compelling stories, visual material, and interactive elements such as quizzes and games. Thank you as well for the beautiful reference booklet each of them received, allowing them to revisit the material afterwards.

Highly recommended, and it was great to see how well you adapted your approach to your audience.**

Warm regards. Thomas Donck

“We’re a family of five that homeschool our children. We booked this tour in early Jan, during the same time the battle was ongoing. Peter is arguably the most knowledgeable guide imaginable. He is an ultimate professional and very kind, engaging and patient with our kids. He has inside information you won’t get from any history book, he’s a true researcher which makes this tour an experience you will remember for life. Thank you Peter for taking care of our family. We highly recommend to anyone reading this. Book with Peter. His knowledge is priceless. “

We loved the Waterloo tour with Peter. He has an excellent knowledge of the battle. Although the tour is expensive, it covers all the main sites and importantly, has plenty of time in the fabulous museum. We had some knowledge of the battle, but there is nothing like actually being on the ground with an expert guide. We loved it!

Mr an Mrs CARL, guests from Michigan 🇺🇸, into the footsteps of my father… 87th Infantery Division/Golden Acorns, 345th Regiment, 2nd Battalion.

“Wow. Peter more than delivered. The entire day was full of discovery for us. To walk in my father’s footsteps during the Battle of the Bulge that frigid brutal battle was beyond our expectations. Peter knew his stuff and even included a small museum in Saint-Hubert with a focus on my father’s division – THAT was amazing and totally unexpected. It was a great, and for me, emotional day in and around Bastogne. Thank you, Peter!”

Among the best tours I’ve ever taken in Europe. Peter was so knowledgeable and passionate about the Battle of the Bulge. He has even compiled a book of resources and his experiences with vets who served. It was a fascinating tour that included important sites as well as a really well done museum. My 18 year old nephew even found the information interesting and appreciated Peter’s style. We will remember
this day for a long time as it gave us a deeper understanding of what my grandfather experienced. Thanks Peter!

Just simply Wow !!!!! Peter, you went above and beyond to enhance this very emotional moment in time. Thousands of miles away, you brought a tiny French community together to respectfully share we me and our group of six, the grief for the sacrifice of my great uncle killed in WWI, 107 years ago. In addition, a military enthusiast, you authored a personalized overview of that war period including provided family documents. Your depth of understanding enhanced this very indelible moment in life, my long time dream, more than fulfilled. In addition, a brief tour of Brussels and a day long tour of the gem city Bruges. Again, your wealth of
knowledge brought it all to life. Traveling is not only about what you observe, but the stories that embellish it all. Peter, you did far more than that !!!

What a day! Peter was an incredibly well-informed guide who made the most of our time visiting the Waterloo battlefields and memorials. Through humor, storytelling and a connection to the present, he delivered on our interest and made the whole day seem easy and light.
As our teenager said,  Peter took an interesting location and made a lifetime memory for me.”

Peter’s tour was absolutely incredible. This was the perfect choice and I’m so glad we chose to work with him. He took us to spots in Bastogne I never knew about and made every stop interesting. His knowledge of the area and the history is unmatched. He also produced what can only be described as a book about the battle, history, and specifics of our tour. I haven’t even gotten through the whole thing it’s so full of information. You cannot pick a better guide than Peter for Bastogne and I would imagine his other tours are just as well done.

For my husband’s 40th birthday, I surprised him with a Battle of the Bulge tour, and wow — the tour exceeded all expectations! Peter is exceptionally knowledgeable,
and puts such care into planning and researching the itinerary. He is a true expert, and took us to many lesser known/visited spots that enhanced our understanding of the battle. Peter is also exceptionally kind and easy to talk to, and this was handsdown a highlight of our trip!

Peter delivers. He goes above and beyond what you expect. He has knowledge deeper than just a tour guide. Hie enthusiasm brings events alive. I bask in the memories he made for us. Finding him was a miracle! I hope he leads us again if fate allows. Visiting a small town that my father was in during WWII 80 years ago was the final brilliant surprise he gave us. I loved meeting people who gave generous help to the GIs in 1945. I had the best birthday of my life. Thank you PETER. You are a treasure. The Forrest Gump of Belgium!

– Mr J. Chaney from Florida USA

My tour with Peter significantly exceeded my expectations. I already knew that Peter was going to be good given his experience and love of history but he was even better than that. He was well prepared to show me what I was interested in seeing and showed me even more than what I was expecting. He was also punctual and took me to sites that most people do not know exist and left me very satisfied. I plan to return soon and also use Peter as my guide for WWI and WWII battlefield sites.

BRUSSELS Citytour (Start, pickup Brussels airport) Sunday, April 7, 2024

– Ms. E. Corey from Chicago USA

I want to give Peter V. an outstanding rating for our Brussels tour. He checked everything out the day before to make sure all went well. Peter gave us a printed itinerary for each member of our 4 person party. He included all of the sites I wanted to see and made reservations for us to eat at the Atomium. Peter is very well versed in the history of the wars fought in Belgium and talked about Waterloo, WW1& 2. It was an extremely satisfying day and I would recommend him to anyone who wants a thorough tour.

We saw the battlefields, several cemeteries, and so very many artifacts remaining from the war, including a tank!. Peter was an excellent guide taking us all through the region, telling us stories from the war, showing us then and now photos, and introducing us to other knowledgeable people. We especially appreciated the wonderful book Peter created to remember our day.

Peter’s tour was EXCELLENT!!! His passion for history and the battlegrounds of Belgium proved to be nothing less. He provided us with details throughout our tour, stopping along the way to Bastogne that created a feel for what the residents of the area must of been going through during the time of war. What an experience we had.
Thank you Peter for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm. It was an unforgettable tour.

Peter is a 10 out of 10! His knowledge of the where, why, when and how of the battle of the bulge in Bastogne is incredible. He knows every inch of the town and enthusiastically relates the places and events.

At one point, he put a scene from Band of Brothers on his iPad. As we reenacted the scene my wife was filming it on her phone!

In addition, he has compiled a book on Bastone, which is incredibly helpful to keep the broader picture in mind as well as have a keepsake to remember the trip.

Peter is a truly fantastic guide who really pulled it all together. Highly recommended!

– Family G. Lipe from Texas, USA.

Peter, thank you so much for our wonderful tour on 21 September! Our group of six loved this tour. Your extensive knowledge of the events of December 1944 and January 1945 and the historical background that led to those events, as well as all of the wonderful stories you shared with us, brought the tour to life in a very special way. We loved the way you used historical photos of the places we visited, as it allowed us to feel like we were present in those turbulent times. And we particularly loved the reenactment of the sniper takedown in Foy that was depicted in Band of Brothers. We are very fortunate to have found you! Here is the information I promised to send to you on Jeff Shaara’s novels. He wrote a trilogy of novels on WWII. The first one, The Rising Tide, is focused on the early days of America’s entrance into the war in North Africa, concluding with the invasion of Italy. The second one, The Steel Wave, goes from D-Day until just before the Battle of the Bulge. The third one, No Less Than Victory, goes from the Battle of the Bulge through the end of the war. As for WWI, he wrote a single novel, To the Last Man. I have read all of these, and they are excellent. I also promised to provide information about the book I read on the loss of my uncle’s escort carrier, the U.S.S. Block Island, off the coast of Africa to a German U-boat. The title of that book is Valor and Courage – The Story of the USS Block Island Escort Carriers in World War II. The author is Benjamin J. Hruska. The book is out of print, but I was able to find it on Amazon. The publisher is University of Alabama Press, Tuscaloosa, which has a website at uapress.ua.edu. I have given you a detailed, public five-star review. We also will recommend your tour to our friends traveling to Europe. If there is anything else I can do to help you develop business, let me know. We wish you the very best! Regards, Mr. G. Lipe

Brussels WATERLOO Tour Saterday, Oct. 5, 2024

– Fam. Knight-Evans from London, UK

We had a thoroughly enjoyable and educational one day tour of Waterloo with Peter in September 2024. He picked us up at our hotel and took us to the battlefield via Wellington’s headquarters in the town of Waterloo where there is a nice museum. We then visited the Lion’s Mound, the Panorama and the battlefield museum before heading to Hougoumont Farm and then on to Napoleon’s headquarters and the Prussian memorial in Plancenoit. Throughout, Peter shared plenty of information about the Battle of Waterloo and its origins but he is also an expert on the battles of World War I and II and Belgian history more generally, so was able to educate us on those as well. We would strongly recommend him.

Peter is an incredible guide and extremely knowledgeable about military history. We went on two tours with Peter, including to Bruges and a battle of the bulge/ Bastogne tour and felt like family with Peter. A tour guide significantly enhances your experience and one like Peter makes it unforgettable. He made everything relatable to my kids 7, 11, and 14. He went out of his way to arrange a birthday cake for our lunch on my middle son’s 11th birthday. Top notch. I hope my family gets to meet up with him on future travels!

Am looking forward to meeting up with Peter again. Highly recommend this trip!

We had an absolutely outstanding tour in Bastogne thanks to our incredible guide, Peter ! He was informative, personable, and truly entertaining from start to finish. His deep knowledge of the Battle of the Bulge brought history to life—he didn’t just share facts, he recreated the experience so vividly that it felt as if we were reliving the battle ourselves.
He pointed out fascinating details that aren’t commonly known and took us to great spots for shopping and dining that we never would have found on our own. He was also a fantastic photographer and made sure we had wonderful pictures to remember the day. Most importantly, he was 100% accommodating with every request and made the entire experience seamless and memorable.
We will absolutely use him again for future tours—highly recommended!

“ Peter’s Battle of the Bulge Tour “ Thursday, Sept. 18/20, 2025

– Mr and Ms Breon from Pennsylvania, USA

Peter Vansteenkiste is NOT “a” tour guide – he is “THE” tour guide that does so much more than “guide” tours!

“Peter is a former paratrooper Sargent that UNLOCKS closed doors and REVEALS lost secrets!

As we were on a Battle of the Bulge three day personal tour, Peter predictably brought us to the Malmedy Massacre memorial. He strongly suggested we look at each name of the 86 murder G.I.s and read them! To our shock, we found our unique last name on the wall – BREON.

To our deeply felt shock we became connected to a direct family descendant and tragic WW2 casualty!

Historical tours by Peter are very special! He also takes his car into strange places and unique vistas as he draws on personal insight!

We just innocently wanted to see where a handful of relatives fought over a vast battlefield in a significant campaign. What we got was an emotional yet educational experience!
